10-Year Treasury Yield

Treasury yields dropped on Wednesday as a highly anticipated inflation figure came in flat compared with the previous month. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note tumbled almost 9 basis points to 2.71%, hitting the lowest level in a week. The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond fell about 2 basis points to 2.979%. Yields move inversely to prices, and a basis point is equal to 0.01%.

CPI

Consumer prices rose 8.5% in July, less than expected as inflation pressures ease a bit. The consumer price index rose 8.5% in July from a year ago, below expectations, due largely to slumping energy prices.Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core CPI rose 5.9% annually and 0.3% monthly, compared with respective estimates of 6.1% and 0.5%. The report was good news for workers, who saw a 0.5% monthly increase in real wages. The sharp decline in yields came as data showed the consumer price index rose 8.5% in July from a year ago, lighter than a Dow Jones estimate of 8.7%. Prices were also unchanged from the previous month. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core CPI, rose 5.9% annually and 0.3% monthly, compared to respective estimates of 6.1% and 0.5%. The inflation report suggested to some that price pressures might have peaked, which could spark speculations that the Federal Reserve could conduct a smaller interest-rate hike next month.

Productivity and Costs

U.S. Productivity Falls for Second Straight Quarter. Rapidly rising labor costs add to inflation pressures as the Federal Reserve attempts to slow price increases. U.S. labor productivity declined for the second consecutive quarter as overall economic output contracted and employers spent more on labor as they added workers. U.S. nonfarm labor productivity—a measure of goods and services produced in the U.S. per hour worked—fell at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.6% in the second quarter from the prior quarter, the Labor Department said Tuesday. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had estimated a drop of 5%.
