Empire State Mfg Index Empire State manufacturing index drops sharply in December. Business activity in New York's manufacturing sector declined sharply this month, according to the Empire State Manufacturing Survey by the regional Federal Reserve bank on Friday. The headline general business conditions index, which measures activity for New York's manufacturers each month, dropped 24 points to -14.5 from +9.1 in November. This was significantly lower than the drop to +2.0 expected by the market and the 12-month average level of -8.6.
FOMC
The Federal Open Market Committee will not be looked back on positively after the central bank did not push back on market expectations for cuts next year, said Brad Conger, deputy chief investment officer at Hirtle Callaghan & Co. Fed doesn’t need a recession to cut rates, The Federal Reserve is willing to cut rates even if the U.S. economy doesn’t dip into a recession in 2024, Chair Jerome Powell said.
CPI
Inflation slowed to a 3.1% annual rate in November. The consumer price index, a closely watched inflation gauge, increased 0.1% in November, and was up 3.1% from a year ago. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, the core CPI increased 0.3% on the month and 4% from a year ago. A 2.3% decrease in energy prices helped keep inflation in check, as gasoline fell 6% and fuel oil was off 2.7%. Food prices increased 0.2%.

Jobless Claims
The economy remains underpinned by the labor market, which continues to churn out jobs. A third report from the Labor Department showed initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 19,000 to a seasonally adjusted 202,000 for the week ended Dec. 9 Economists were dismissive of the persistent elevation in unemployment rolls. The number of people receiving benefits after an initial week of aid, a proxy for hiring, increased 20,000 to 1.876 million during the week ending Dec. 2, the claims report showed.
